Award-Winning Design: Using Angled Walls and Soffit on Your Exterior

Modern design can mean different things to different architects, but most agree that unexpected details will always make an impact on contemporary projects. Sometimes, it’s those details that can win awards.

Angled walls and soffit can add this kind of distinction to your design, and Nichiha recently approved this application for its architectural wall panels. Here’s how a few of our favorite architects and designers have incorporated Nichiha’s angled wall and soffit products in their own spaces.

North Texas Food Bank

Construction of the new North Texas Food Bank location was quite the undertaking. Designers from GSR Andrade Architects were brought in after three years of discussion and fundraising among North Texas community leaders and developers.

“The project took three existing facilities in Dallas and combined them into one,” says Dano Smith, Project Manager at GSR Andrade.

The North Texas Food Bank facility would include an addition of the Perot Family Campus, and the team at GSR Andrade wanted a warm, community-focused design for the project. “We wanted it to look natural,” says Dano. “The material we used needed to speak to the aesthetic of the exterior.”

But finding a product that would meet the requirements of the sizable project was no easy task. Designers turned to our team to help them achieve a look that would deliver impact across the 231,000-square-foot design. They selected fiber cement products from our Illumination collection — in a custom orange for NTFB — and VintageWood collection for an impressive, modern design.

“The facility is double the size of NTFB’s previous warehouse in South Dallas, with triple the cooler and freezer space. PFC is also located more centrally within NTFB’s 13-county service area, closer to major highways and where many of our volunteers live, work, and play,” according to GSR Andrade

The time, energy and intention that went into the project paid off — the team was awarded the 2019 Top Ten Award from Topping Out Awards.

Starbucks Coffee

The team at STITCH Design Shop also incorporated angled wall and soffit details into their design for a new Starbucks in Winston-Salem.

“Starbucks usually has their own mold with their designs, but with this project, they let us do something different,” said Pete Fala, the designer on the project. Pete is a fan of the modern aesthetic at Starbucks locations but wanted to give the new store some distinction.

“The kind of standard, modern design that’s become popular in chain restaurants like Wendy’s looks nice, but it’s played out, in my opinion,” says Pete.

Wood is also a standard in modern design, but architects often hesitate to work with the material. “We’re getting tired of the problems that come with real wood and the detailing that’s required, the maintenance...” said Pete. He’d worked with Nichiha fiber cement on other projects before and selected the product for its reliability and range of finishes.

Our fiber cement products offered the Starbucks exterior the warm look of wood without the long-term maintenance requirements. “If done elegantly and with really nice materials, it can be very impactful,” said Pete. Pete chose VintageWood in Cedar for the impressive entrance.

The application of angled wall and soffit combined with contrasting metal panels adds a bold and modern touch to the familiar coffeeshop’s exterior.

Osprey Landing Project

Modern exterior of the Osprey Landing Project. There is a pool and long steps leading up to the back of the structure.

The Florida Osprey Landing Project designers incorporated our panels into this waterfront oasis. Our VintageWood collection was used and applied horizontally to create a beautiful siding that can withstand the environment.

This building needed a siding that could take on high winds, salt water and humidity, and our Wood Series was the perfect way to get the look of wood with more durability and less maintenance.

Our siding took this modern design and added dimension to the structure. With a building that had so much glass, it was important to twist the cold design elements and add some warm elements throughout the space.
