Where can I obtain touch up paint and color-matched caulking for my Sierra Premium Shake or Architectural Wall Panels?

For Sierra Premium Shake, please take a sample to any paint or hardware store for them to match and ask for 100% acrylic latex paint.

If this is for a custom color product (Illumination, Ribbed, TuffBlock or Latura V-Groove), a small amount of touch up paint arrives with your order. If you need more, please purchase from your original supplier. Our painting process is machine-applied with a very robust coating so standard house paint will not match so please be sure to obtain the matching Nichiha paint.

Color-matched caulking sealant should comply with ASTM C920 rating, have a class of 35, 50, or 100/50 (minimum 35% joint movement), provide two-sided adhesion at joints and be a polyurethane or polyurethane hybrid. Please contact us for more information.

I tried to order samples but the site says they are “sold out”. How can I receive them in time?
We are so sorry about that. Sometimes demand unexpectedly peaks on random samples and our pre-cut stock of samples runs low. Don't worry though, this does not mean the product is out of stock for your project.

If samples are sold out on the Sample & Accessory Store, please let us know what you need and where you'd like them sent using the Contact a Rep form so we can get those out to you.
Can I order larger or smaller samples for mockups and color boards?
Absolutely! We can ship from 3"x3" samples up to 12"x18" samples. You can let us know the product, color and size along with your project and contact details using the Contact a Rep form. Please allow 5-7 business days on custom-sized samples, depending on transit time.

If you need mockup materials larger than that, you can purchase full panels, installation hardware and corner/trim accessories by visiting our Panels & Accessories Store and using your major credit card just enough for your project/mockup.
How do I pronounce "Nichiha"?
We get asked this a lot. Let's try it: "Nee-chee-ha". It doesn't have a literal English definition but we can tell you what it stands for: artisanally crafted, highly engineered architectural cladding made by and for tradespeople, architects and engineers. Nichiha is built on the guiding principles of Elevating Customers, Delivering Precision, Taking Initiative, Embracing Perspectives, and Valuing Camaraderie. We stand for these so buildings with Nichiha can stand for a long time.
What is fiber cement? What are the ingredients of Nichiha products?
Fiber cement as a category has been growing in popularity since the early 1900s because of its proven performance and reasonable cost. The durability comes from a unique combination of cement, fly ash, sand and wood fibers. It can be made in a dry mix process for thicker materials like our Architectural Wall Panels or a wet mix for the 5/16" products. You can find more information in our material Safety Data Sheet (SDS) reports.
What is "rainscreen" siding/cladding? Should I use it on my house?
Rainscreen is defined as a construction method where the siding material is held off the wall assembly to allow for air movement and drainage. This improves the longevity of the actual siding while allowing moisture from the wall cavity and weather to escape maintaining a dry, healthy structure. In some markets it is required but is increasing in general popularity because of the high performance and decreasing costs. Rainscreen systems come in many forms, from wood battens (strapping) to metal subframing or clip systems like Nichiha. We have worked to both simplify the rainscreen attachment while making it readily available and competitive in cost. In this way, any project from a home to a hospital can have all the high-design, high-performance benefits of rainscreen cladding performance.
What are the sizes Nichiha offers?
Available in two sizes and two orientations, the Architectural Wall Panel products allow for a combination of configurations for design flexibility, but all using the same installation component system. All of our 3030 (455mm x 3030mm / 18"x10' nom.) panels can be installed in stacked bond only for either horizontal or vertical orientation. Our 1818 panels (455mm x 1818mm / 18"x6' nom.) can be designed for either stacked bond or running (staggered) joint bond.
What is the difference between "open joint" and "closed joint" cladding systems?
A closed joint system deflects most of the weather and works to manage any moisture in the rainscreen cavity via air movement. Nichiha is a "closed-joint" drained & back-ventilated rainscreen (DBVR) that is meant to be installed in "one-pass". The panels are all ship-lapped with integrated sealant beads at panel edge to interlock for a sealed, closed panel joint. This ship-lapped edge also accommodates the Ultimate Clip II attachment. The clip provides the standoff required to create a cavity by gravity for water to drain and moisture to evaporate via vertical and transverse air movement. Open joint rainscreen systems also allow free movement of water and air but through open gaps at the panel edges, relying on air movement and gravity to drain water and evaporate moisture. This requires the use of multiple third party components plus specialized UV-stable waterproofing since the elements are in constant contact with the waterproofing.
We're interested in Nichiha for our project. What are the most popular products?
At the moment, our most popular products are our VintageWood and custom color Illumination panels. Overall our most popular products are a combination of a clean, crisp aesthetic complemented by the warmth of a wood look product. Some Nichiha combinations people really connect with are VintageWood + ArchitecturalBlock/EmpireBlock or the distressed wood look of RoughSawn + IndustrialBlock. One contemporary look that is growing too is our high-gloss mirror finish Miraia panel.
My project is in a wildfire prone area. Is Nichiha fire rated or fire resistant?
Because of the way our products are manufactured and due to the raw materials used, all Nichiha products are fire-resistant and ignition-resistant. The 5/16” Nichi Product lap, panel and shingle are all rated non-combustible. And everything we make can be used in conjunction with gypsum sheathing to achieve wall assemblies of varying fire ratings (see NFPA-285 testing documents).

We have a small project. Is there a minimum order?
No job is too small for us! We make it easy to use Nichiha on your project - whether a bonus room fireplace, outdoor living area or huge commercial building. There is no minimum order. You can purchase direct or order through your local suppliers. For projects smaller than 300 square feet, you can purchase full panels, installation hardware and corner/trim accessories by visiting our Panels & Accessories Store.

Regarding 1/2" x 9'4" Sierra Premium Shake and Savannah Smooth planks and 5/16" NichiProduct lap, panel, shingle and trim any minimums are set at the discretion of the local stocking supplier.
Can Nichiha be used for interior walls? What about fireplaces or wet shower areas?
All of our products are approved for interior use but some especially lend themselves to interior architecture and outdoor living spaces. Our Concrete Series panels (EmpireBlock and IndustrialBlock) are particularly loved to easily achieve unique, high end interior feature walls and accents without the mess of traditional materials. Use of drywall can even be avoided on walls that are not fire-rated, further lowering installation costs and time. However, our products are not tested nor rated for use in shower surrounds nor in open fireplaces.
Can we get the panels in larger sizes?
At this time, we do not offer larger panels. The beauty of the Nichiha system is the accessibility and adaptability. Because we make them in these standard sizes, it allows for competitive pricing, quick lead times and the speed and flexibility afforded by field fabrication.
How are Nichiha AWP rainscreen panels different from other fiber cement products like James Hardie?
All other fiber cement products are made with a wet slurry or wet extrusion process. Our Architectural Wall Panels are made with a dry process. This means a dry mix of cement, sand, fly ash and wood fibers and oriented chips are formed under high pressure into moulds. This allows us to create a thicker, stronger product with more definition. So we get even smooths, crisp v-groove panel reveals and realistic brick, stone and wood textures. All that and it is still highly workable for field cutting and installation, something not possible with a wet process. This thicker material and dry pressing process also affords ability for machine cutting the edges to accommodate our hidden fastener rainscreen clip system with enough panel edge strength to meet or exceed high wind loads in the toughest environments.

Which product would be a good alternative to stucco?
The closest direct correlation is either ArchitecturalBlock or TuffBlock. If your project is in the Northern States or Canada, these products will be less expensive and easier to install in any weather than plaster stucco.
We would like a wood look plank on our project. What is the closest product you recommend for a wood look or shiplap aesthetic?
Most folks like the 5/8" thick modern VintageWood or RoughSawn for that timeless wood look without the maintenance of traditional wood. Both panels are 18" (nom.) widths and install with our hidden fastener rainscreen system. VintageWood has the appearance of three 6" planks per panel width and RoughSawn is made to look like four 4.5" planks wide. Both can be installed either vertically or horizontally.

Alternatively, for a stunning craftsman, bungalow or transitional styled cedar sidewall look, our 1/2" Sierra Premium Shake planks come in four prefinished colors. These are installed like normal blind-fastened sidings but with a thicker shadow line, faster installation and less waste than the thinner 1/4" or 5/16" traditional products. The corners can even be mitered to get that authentic shake appeal.
Which product would be a good alternative to masonry and concrete?
Using Nichiha Architectural Wall Panels in place of traditional architectural smooth concrete, mortar-applied brick, stacked stone and large format quarry stone changes the scope of work from "wet" to "dry". This means our KuraStone, SandStone and the Concrete & Brick Series can be installed in any weather and don't require specialty contractors. The money, time, and callbacks saved are huge reasons architects, interior designers and owners love these products. Plus they look amazing!
Our project is in the VE substitution phase. Can you send me a submittal package?
You bet. Can you tell us a bit more about your project so we can be of even better assistance?
What is the total thickness including the clip system?
This is very important to know when planning window, door and transition details.

The ArchitecturalBlock, Wood Series, Concrete Series, TuffBlock, Ribbed, Miraia and CanyonBrick are all 5/8"(16mm) panel + 3/8"(10mm) clip = 1"(26mm) net thickness.

SandStone and VintageBrick are 3/4"(18mm) panel + 3/8"(10mm) clip = 1-1/8"(28mm). Novenary Tile is 7/8"(21mm) panel + 3/8"(10mm) clip = 1-1/4"(31mm) net thickness.

KuraStone and LedgeStone are 1-3/8"(35mm) + 3/8"(10mm) clip = 1-3/4"(45mm) thick.
What is the warranty and how do we get the most out of our Nichiha siding?
Our warranties vary based on product and start at 15 years. The best way to make your exterior look better longer is to keep debris away and wash it (not pressure wash!) regularly. You can find out more, including how to replace a panel, in the 'Care & Maintenance' section of our Installation Instructions. All of these details can be found in the Resource Center section of our website.
How long does the finish last until it needs repainting? How do I refinish the panels?
All Nichiha products are designed to have a paint cycle of 10-15 years but will likely last much longer, especially the coatings on Architectural Wall Panels. Usually the challenge with any material is fade on the Southern exposure but our AWP products are designed to resist UV more than most products. If ever there is a need to paint, we recommend three specific types of acrylic resin paints (1) Sherwin Williams - Emerald, Resillience (2) PPG - Arci-Sheild (3) Benjamin Moore - Regal Select.

You can find out more by downloading our Install Guides found in the Resource Center section of our website.

For Sierra Premium Shake, you will need to take a sample to any paint or hardware store for them to match and ask for 100% acrylic latex paint.
Can Nichiha withstand extreme conditions like high hurricane/tornado winds, salt spray, humidity, freeze/thaw and firestorms?
Nichiha excels at high design and high performance in any climate. Cement board siding (1/4"-5/16"/6mm-8mm) itself has a well documented history of better durability and proven performance than traditional materials for over 100 years. In 1974, Nichiha took that to the next level with a cladding system innovation that exceeds the demands of the brutally severe conditions inherent to the island coastal climates that could be tropical one day and arctic conditions the next. Think hurricane season in Florida + Alaska in winter, all on the same island and possibly even the same day.

Like Nichiha products, all fiber cement board is naturally resistant to mildew, pests, rot and the effects of a salt water environment. The unique dry manufacturing process by which the 1/2" Premium Planks and 5/8"+ Architectural Wall Panels results in a very flat product that are highly impact resistant and won't warp, bow or buckle even in the wildest temperature swings.

Lastly, our patented Ultimate Clip II hidden fastener for the 5/8"+ AWP products goes even further, providing high performance and longevity in the most extreme conditions.

Visit our Product Testing section for more information or watch this Tech Talk:

How is Nichiha sustainable and healthy for our building?
One of the great attributes of cement is long term durability. However, making raw cement itself uses a lot of energy, known as "embodied carbon" and sourcing sand responsibly is expensive so most cement-based products don't employ sustainable methods. Additionally, ready-mix concrete and other cementitious materials in construction are heavy to transport and have high thermal mass, low insulative value, creating even more embodied energy and requiring more energy mitigation in the resulting building. But the alternatives to cement and concrete are too expensive, don't perform well in the rigors of most environments, aren't in enough supply and need to be replaced or highly maintained - not a sustainable, climate-positive story we want in the built environment. Nichiha is not content with this and is always exploring and implementing new cement, sand, manufacturing and logistics solutions.

Currently, here are the primary ways we are balancing durability and superior performance of cement and sand with the environmental impact of those raw materials:

1) Reducing the amount of these products to minimal as possible and complementing them with fly ash and wood fibers, both high-performing post-industrial and post consumer waste that would otherwise be hauled to a landfill or burned
2) Responsible sourcing of these materials
3) A superior manufacturing process that balances durability, longevity and thermal mass
4) ...resulting in more resilient building in extreme conditions, decreasing the need to repair, tear-down or replace them
5) Building more plants and storage facilities to improve proximity to jobsites
6) Providing a powerful and affordable back ventilated and drained rainscreen that increases airflow and evacuates moisture, contributing to improved indoor air quality
7) Making a system that is easy to install over and integrate with continuous insulation to decrease energy usage
8) Purchasing and promoting carbon credits
9) Making these products more accessible and competitive so more people can use them
and 10) Spending millions in R&D to improve on all these every year.

Healthy, resilient, sustainable - Nichiha buildings not only look amazing, they last longer and make the planet better.
What is the R-Value thermal performance of the panels?

The R-Values of Nichiha Architectural Wall Panels tested to ASTM C518 at 75 ⷪF Mean Temperature are as follows;

5/8” panel: .47 R-Value
3/4” panel: .57 R-Value
7/8” panel: .66 R-Value

Nichiha can be installed over outboard continuous insulation of all thicknesses; continuous insulation thicknesses of 1" or less can be installed without furring, continuous insulation thicknesses over 1” require minimum 16” o.c. furring.

We are doing a renovation re-side. Can this be mounted as a retrofit skin over my existing siding, brick masonry, concrete stucco or EIFS?
The short answer is, "it depends". Our Retrofit Guide outlines specific furring attachment schedules to be able to install over masonry. Also, Nichiha products can be installed over structural panel siding like T-111 plywood. Regarding stucco and EIFS, both Nichiha and EIFS/stucco associations require removal of the plaster, lath and foam prior to installing Nichiha. Keep in mind extra attention should be paid to detailing windows, doors and transitions as there will likely be a plane/thickness variance to address. Nichiha offers multiple trim profiles and  PDF/DWG/Revit detail downloads for just such an occasion.
What are the trim options for Nichiha's Architectural Wall Panel rainscreen clip system? Can we use traditional corner and window trim like 5/4" fiber cement?
We offer crisp aluminum corners and transitions trim options in 10' lengths that are especially suited for modern or contemporary architectural styling. For a horizontal install, we also make 18" pre-manufactured fiber cement corners that match our panel colors and profiles.
How do I clean the panels? Are they scratch- or graffiti-resistant?
For normal maintenance and cleaning, dilute a mild household soap in water and wash with a hose and soft brush. Please do not ever pressure wash any fiber cement siding.

For graffiti, most of our Architectural Wall Panels and the prefinished Sierra Shake planks are more graffiti resistant than normal latex paint. However, they are not graffiti proof. If Nichiha gets tagged with spray paint on your project AND you want to wash it off, you can use something like CitriStrip, Goof Off Graffiti Remover or Tagaway, being sure to follow manufacturer guidelines. You can find all cleaning recommendations by downloading our Installation Guides.
My material was damaged when it arrived. How can I get this resolved?
We want to make it right with you. Though our amazing logistics team takes every precaution possible to ensure your product shows up in great shape, we are also realistic. Damage may happen to building materials in transit. This can be distressing, we know, but we look forward to resolving it for you.

If this happens, first thing, please take pictures of your damaged product and notate on the bill of lading and proof of delivery. Next, notify your original local supplier right away. Once they send us the information, we will work with them to resolve the situation and get your project back up and running as quickly as possible. If you have any questions during this process, please email info@nichiha.com and one of our reps will be in touch with you as soon as possible.
Does Nichiha require panels to be installed by a certified or approved installer? Can you recommend an experienced installer?
Nichiha products can be installed by any professional tradesperson and even DIYers as long as the Installation Guidelines are followed explicitly. To ensure a successful outcome of your project, we offer complimentary pre-construction meetings, onsite field training and Technical Design Reviews (TDR) by our in-house architectural and engineering support team. All of these can also easily be performed for you in a live online video session. To request these services, please click here to fill out a form.

If you find yourself still needing help with installation, you can contact one of our local sales reps who can advise you on the best path forward for your project.
We are a contractor interested in adding the Nichiha line to our product offerings. Do you offer installation and estimating training?
Great choice and yes we do! Please send your contact and project information here so we can set up an in-person or online session.
We are doing a renovation re-side. Can this be mounted as a retrofit skin over my existing siding, brick masonry, concrete stucco or EIFS?
The short answer is, "it depends". Please see our Technical Bulletin on Retrofits. Each scenario is different. For example, the quality of existing masonry must be evaluated to see if it can support the addition of furring and loads imposed by AWP and the building's wind design criteria. Also, Nichiha products can be installed over structural panel siding like T-111 plywood. Regarding stucco and EIFS, both Nichiha and the EIFS/Stucco associations require removal of the plaster, lath and foam prior to installing Nichiha. Keep in mind extra attention should be paid to detailing windows, doors and transitions as there will likely be a plane/thickness variance to address. Nichiha offers multiple trim profiles and PDF/DWG/Revit detail downloads for just such an occasion.

Lastly, if working on a renovation re-side we encourage you to please engage with our Technical team for support here.
Are your products already painted? How long does the finish last until it needs repainting?
All Nichiha products are designed to have a paint cycle of 10-15 years but will likely last much longer, especially the coatings on Architectural Wall Panels. Usually the challenge with any material is fade on the Southern exposure but our AWP products are designed to resist UV more than most products. You can find out more by downloading our Install Guides.
Can Nichiha's AWP (Architectural Wall Panels) be installed both horizontally and vertically? Is there a hardware and accessory difference? Can the AWP 3030 panels be installed with staggered joints as a running bond pattern instead of stacked? Is this approved for both horizontal AND vertical orientation?
The design flexibility of the AWP system allows for 4 configurations to meet the design intent of most projects.

All of our 3030 panels (455mm x 3030mm / 18"x10' nom.) can be installed in a stacked bond for only 1] horizontal or 2] vertical orientations.

Our 1818 panels (455mm x 1818mm / 18"x6' nom.) can be designed for either 3] stacked bond or 4] running (staggered) joint bond.

There are differences in the hardware and accessories required between the vertical and horizontal oriented installations. For install hardware components, the only difference is separate vertical and horizontal starter tracks for the different panel orientations, so make sure you order accordingly.

The other difference is the Nichiha corner trim options. The only option for vertical panel orientation is metal corner trims while for horizontal panel orientation, both the 18" pre-manufactured matching fiber corners and the metal corner trim choices are available.
Do these come pre-cut or can they be field modified on the jobsite? What tools do I need to cut and fasten the siding?
To achieve quick lead times, broad product availability and easy ordering, Nichiha is made in standard sizes that are cut to size on site by the applicator. The main basic tools needed are saw(s) with dust collection and fiber cement carbide-tipped blades as well as an impact driver for the fasteners, snips or metal blades for metal components. Please use the precaution needed with respect to silica dust whenever cutting or drilling the products. Please refer to our Silica and New OSHA Rule for Construction document.
Can this be installed over foam insulation?
Yes. Nichiha has approved detailing for multiple forms of external/outboard foam and mineral wool insulation to comply with International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). All Nichiha products can be applied over 1" of foam insulation without additional external framing components. Details of how to install over thicker foam or mineral wool of any kind can be found in our Installation Guidelines. Learn more by watching this Tech Talk:

I am on a budget. Are the clips and track attachment required or can I install without them?
It depends on the product. To preserve the warranty and performance designed into the 3030 and 1818 Architectural Panels, they must be installed using the Ultimate Clip II and Starter Track appropriate to the panel orientation.

However, our 5/16" NichiProduct lap, panel, shingle & trims along with our 1/2" x 9'4" Savannah Smooth and Sierra Premium Shake are blind- or face-fastened without clips.
Do I need to install 1" or 5/4 rainscreen strapping before installing Nichiha?
Rainscreen strapping is not required for the Architectural Wall Panels as they are attached with the Ultimate Clip II rainscreen system. If you have questions about your specific jobsite and/or needs, please contact our Technical Services team here.
Can I install these on a sloped, curved or radius wall?

AWP may be installed on forward-leaning or sloped walls in accordance with the Soffits & Angled (Non-Vertical) Walls section of the Horizontal AWP Install Guide. Backward leaning or sloped walls are not approved because in this condition the panels would be exposed to accelerated weathering. AWP may not be installed over curved surfaces but flat segments that are faceted or segmented are feasible. Please submit your project contact and project information via our Contact a Rep or Technical Design Review forms.

We are working on a design build retail project. Can I attach fixtures or signage over your panels?
Yes. When installing railings or signage over Architectural Wall Panels, ensure fasteners are secured through spacers to the framing or other structural support. Do not fasten any attachment solely to AWP. Find out more here.
Do raw edges and joints need to be sealed, caulked or primed? Does Nichiha provide color matching caulking sealant and touch up paint? (what types)
Yes. With the exception of our custom color products (Illumination, Ribbed or TuffBlock), edge-coat and touch up paint should be 100% exterior acrylic latex and matched at a local paint supplier. Color-matched caulking sealant should comply with ASTM C920 rating, have a class of 35, 50, or 100/50 (minimum 35% joint movement), provide two-sided adhesion at joints and be a polyurethane or polyurethane hybrid.
Can this be used on shipping container, modular or prefabricated construction projects?
There are multiple applications for which Nichiha products are approved for modular and prefab assemblies. We are happy to perform a Technical Design Review for all such projects.
Can this be used for decking, fencing or privacy screen walls?

Is the Essential Flashing actually essential?
Our Essential Flashing components are not required but provide an integrated Nichiha solution with superior aesthetic and moisture management. Using these helps avoid needing to source third party components.
How do I repair the panels or corners if they get damaged after installation?
The good news is an entire wall or column of product does NOT need to be removed to repair or replace a panel. A basic concrete patch can be used for repairs. If the panel is damaged enough to need replacement, there is a simple process for this outlined in our Installation Guide. Basically, one panel is cut out and another panel is placed and fastened.
How do I clean the panels and how often?
Over a period of time, siding, as with any outdoor building material, will need washing to remove dust, dirt, etc. To aid in maintaining the siding’s appearance, we recommend cleaning the siding every 12 months to remove dirt and debris. A mild household detergent mixed with tap water in a medium sized bucket, and soft bristle brush (such as a car wash brush) may be used. Do not use a stiff bristle or a wire bristle brush as damage may result. Additionally, do not use harsh cleaners, abrasives, or strong solvents as they can damage the paint and/or the siding surface. Rinse with clean water from a standard garden hose. DO NOT use high-pressure washers as the extreme psi blast can damage the coating or surface. Find out more details here.
Can the Architectural Wall Panels be installed on a ceiling or at a soffit?
Yes, but in addition to the normal installation hardware, additional (face) fastening is required along the centerline of the panels. Please refer to the Soffits & Angled (Non-Vertical) Walls section of the Horizontal AWP Install Guide. You can also check out this Tech Talk about soffit installation:

We have a client/HOA/Design Review meeting. Can you provide the information we will need to propose Nichiha?
Thanks for considering Nichiha! Please tell us a little bit more about your project so we can best be of assistance. In the meantime, from our experience you'll need samples, brochures and warranty information. If you are in Western States, you'll likely also need documentation on Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) approval and National Fire Prevention Agency (NFPA) 285 to satisfy local regulation or Firewise requirement rigors.
Do you have AIA accredited CEU or Lunch & Learn presentations online or in-person?
100% yes! Visit our Continuing Education page to see a list of our current available courses.

You can request a live online or in-person CEU presentation to be given via Zoom or Google Hangouts at your convenience.
What is the total thickness including the clip system?
This is very important to know when planning window, door and transition details.

Our Modern Series, Wood Series, Concrete Series, Ribbed, Miraia and CanyonBrick are all 5/8"(16mm) panel + 3/8"(10mm) clip = 1"(26mm) net thickness.

Our SandStone and VintageBrick are 3/4"(18mm) panel + 3/8"(10mm) clip = 1-1/8"(28mm).

Our Novenary Tile is 7/8"(21mm) panel + 3/8"(10mm) clip = 1-1/4"(31mm) net thickness.

KuraStone and LedgeStone are 1-3/8"(35mm) + 3/8"(10mm) clip = 1-3/4"(45mm) thick.
Can this be installed over continuous exterior foam or mineral wool insulation without additional furring? What about installing over integrated insulated panel (like Hunter XCI) assemblies?
Yes. Nichiha has approved detailing for multiple forms of external/outboard foam and mineral wool insulation to comply with International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). All Nichiha products can be applied over 1" of foam insulation without external additional framing components. Details of how to install over thicker foam or any mineral wool of any kind as well as information on applying over integrated CI panel (like Hunter XCI) assemblies can be found in our Installation Guides. We are working on a modular project. Is Nichiha approved for offsite construction?
There are multiple applications for which Nichiha products are approved for modular and prefab assemblies. We are happy to perform a Technical Design Review for all such projects.
I’m an Interior Designer. Can Nichiha be used for both interior and exterior facades?
Of course! Designers like the flexibility of shortening the schedule and turning wet, messy scopes of work to efficient dry-applied installations for both new-build and renovation applications. If the wall is not fire-rated, the Architectural Wall Panels can be installed without drywall - saving costs, time on the schedule and another trade. Please check our interior photos in our gallery for more inspiration.
How tall can Nichiha be installed? Our project is over 100 ft.
This is largely dependent upon a project’s design pressures and the exterior wall assemblies. Nichiha evaluates projects taller than 45 feet as well as those located in high wind speed regions. Most buildings fit below 160 feet, which is a number used by ASCE 7 with respect to wind pressure calculation methods. Thus we use this number as our current standard height limit. For planned Nichiha installations over 45' from grade, please complete our Technical Design Review (TDR) request form. Our Architectural Services team performs this complimentary review once we have the plans and location details.
How do I detail corner, transition, termination, soffit, window, door, parapet roof and slab edge conditions?
Great question. Why not tell us more about your project or download just the details you need in pdf, DWG or Revit formats using our Architectural Detail Finder?
How do I detail a recessed window? Do I use the outside corner pieces for this?
There are a few architecturally-accurate options for recessed storefront style window conditions. While a traditional detail involves use of a locally sourced flashing or brake metal, using Nichiha metal corners with panel returns (horizontal or vertical panel orientation) or the 18" factory corners (horizontal panel orientation only) is a more integrated, accurate detail. You can access and download just the details you want using our Architectural Detail Finder, Contact a Rep and/or request a Technical Design Review with our Architectural Services team.
I am specifying Nichiha. Do you have 3-Part Specifications in an editable format like Word?
Thanks for specifying us! Can you tell us a bit more about your project? In the meantime, we publish our 3-Part Specifications in editable formats here.
Do you have a submittal packet for Value Engineering (VE) so I can propose Nichiha as an alternate?
We'd love to help you with this. Please complete a Contact a Rep form and our sales team will help package everything to your project needs.

In the meantime, from our experience you'll need warranty, Install Guides, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and samples & brochures.

If you are in Western States, you'll likely also need documentation on Wildlands Urban Interface (WUI) approval and National Fire Prevention Agency (NFPA) 285 to satisfy local regulation or Firewise requirement rigors.
Do you provide shop drawing, layout, or design assistance to help me determine the number of panels, clips, etc?
Since our materials are all field-modified, there is no need for shop drawings. However, whether a prompt shipment or a future design concept, we have resources available to help you with your project. Use our pricing tools to get a quick estimate or a more detailed evaluation with our Materials Calculator. Go through our Architectural Services' Technical Design Review process to get plan markups or complete plan review. You can even have a pre-construction meeting with one of our Technical Field Representatives to review your plans to provide insights on common hurdles to be aware of as well as training for your team.

Can the AWP 1818 or 3030 panels be installed on a soffit or ceiling application? What is the fastening schedule?
Yes but in addition to the normal installation hardware, additional (face) fastening is required along the centerline of the panels. Please refer to the Soffits & Angled (Non-Vertical) Walls section of the Horizontal AWP Install Guide. You can also check out this Tech Talk about soffit applications:

Do you require furring on CMU and concrete walls?
Furring planes normalize AWP installation as the system is designed to anchor to stud wall framing and/or furring. Furring over concrete allows for adjustments to ensure the application is level and plumb. Imperfections of a concrete block wall or with stud framing can mirror out to the cladding, causing exaggerated shadow lines or other quality installation issues. Further, it is sometimes necessary in the installation process to finesse panels to fit, which can require withdrawing fasteners to make adjustments. This is much more manageable with furring over concrete.
