NICHIHA SELECTED FOR THE FIRST LEED PLATINUM HOME IN THE SOUTHEAST

The Fiber Cement Siding Product Chosen for its Environmental Sustainability and Cost Savings Nestled in the heart of Decatur, Georgia, sits an entirely sustainable home that has received notable accolades for “green construction” by the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED for Homes program. Located at 225 Wilton Drive, the new two-story, 2,800 square-foot residence is called the RainShine House, reflective of the butterfly roof designed to capture rainfall and the utilization of natural light to shine throughout the home. These key features were created by Robert Cain, principle of Robert M. Cain – an architectural firm in Atlanta, and the home was built by Decatur builder Robert Soens of Pinnacle Custom Builders, Inc.

Constructed and designed for an active retired couple, the home has three-bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms and occupies a 1/3 acre infill lot. RainShine House was awarded the highest available rating offered by the LEED Program– Platinum level, and it is the first in the Southeast to receive this recognition. Furthermore, the home is certified by Energy Star and EarthCraft programs. Of the numerous ecological features evident in the home’s structure, Nichiha Fiber Cement was selected as the exterior siding product of choice due to the material’s environmental sustainability and the contribution to LEED points. “We are very pleased with Nichiha’s fiber cement siding. We chose the product because it was more economical, presented a thicker shadow line and offered many green benefits and LEED credits,” said Robert Cain, principle architect on the project. “We also selected Nichiha for its local distribution from the company’s plant in Macon and the product’s remarkable durability.”

The RainShine House features Nichiha Sierra Smooth Lap seven inch siding. Sierra Premium Smooth boards provide a design alternative with the classic appearance of smooth painted siding. “Nichiha’s upper-end siding really showcased the house and revealed the natural beauty of the product,” commented David Lovegrove, outside sales associate for Alside Supply in Smyrna, Ga. who supplied the siding, decking and trim to the home’s builders. The RainShine House is now complete and will be featured on the Decatur Holiday Candlelight Tour of Homes in December 2009.
